For Earth Day, Kay Khan, an embroidery and textile artist, is presenting an exclusive handcrafted “artpack” inspired by the flowers at the Santa Fe Canyon Preserve to raise funds to aid in preserving the canyon. What started as a PNM land gift has turned into a 575-acre oasis with wildflowers, birds, willows, deer and beaver. Proceeds from the sale of the "artpack" will go toward renovations at the 20-year-old nature preserve. In addition, the proceeds will be used for new signage, creating an ADA trail, a bird blind, and an educational gathering space.
Kay Khan, a resident of Santa Fe, uses a variety of sewing techniques to weave together mosaics of spirited colors and intricate details. Influenced by pattern, structure, color and composition, Khan’s driving aspiration is to express through her work a narrative that conveys what she sees and feels—narratives abstract yet direct.
For this particular bespoke "artpack", Khan drew the images on paper to get a sense of their structure, then appliquéd and embroidered on the quilted panel until she arrived at the precise effect. The pack will be filled with gifts from Santa Fe’s favorite local businesses, and all proceeds from the sale will be donated to The Nature Conservancy.
